A benign essential tremor is the involuntary movement of a part or parts of the body. It is the most common type of tremor and movement disorder. These tremors are uncontrollable, rhythmic, up-and-down movements that are painless.

The cause is unknown but is inherited. Who is affected? Those who were born to parents who have the disorder.

There is no "cure" either medical or alternative. Treatment does not consist of medical intervention unless all non-medical methods are ineffectual. Treatment consists of:
avoiding caffeine
avoiding stress
staying well rested
avoiding stimulants
avoiding extreme in temperatures (weather)

If these strategies don't work, then medications may be prescribed. Believe it or not, alcohol is found to improve the tremors but is not recommended as a treatment for obvious reasons.

In cases where the tremors are disabling, treatment may include a contralateral thalamotomy (destroying the thalamus gland on the opposite side) or unilateral high-frequency thalamic stimulation.
