Let's assume, because you're on codeine, that this is for a physical pain. My ex-girlfriend went from Vicodine to Perkoset to heroin in a matter of 3 years. She was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia - a very painful disorder. In contrast, my sister is suffering from the effects of a motorcycle accident that left her with 2 herniated discs a fractured and displaced tailbone and sciatica - also very painful. She has just admitted today that she has been using heroin for the past 6 months. Both my ex-girlfriend and sister were cut-off from pain medication by their doctors. The problem isn't that they didn't have access to pain killers - it's that they didn't have access to treat their condition. Pain killers treat the symptoms. The first step is to make a decision to stop all pain killers, legal and illegal. Heroin takes approximately 72 hours to physically leave the body. The problem after that is the chemical inbalance that occurs. Methodone is used to curb the withdraw as well as the depression, but it is also addictive. Buprenorphine is a newer drug just recently approved by the FDA in 2002 which is supposedly not addictive and works as well - if not better - than methodone. After that - and assuming you're in physical pain - refuse to see any doctor that prescribes pain medication instead of treating the problem. This is quintessential to your recovery, both with your physical pain as well as your addiction. Counselling will help; however, you need to make the decision. No drug, doctor, counselor or word of advice is 1/1,000,000th as strong as any decision you make. Yes, your decision to stop is stronger than the heroin. But be warned that your decision is stronger than your recovery from addiction. Make the RIGHT decision. "Conversations with God" is a book I'll recommend to you - it's not religious or judgemental and is definately life-altering. Show us your strength. You can get over this. But only you can make that decision.

Hey I am a recovering 24 year old. Never shoot up. But i did do it for 3 years. I got off of it about 2 months ago. I still have cravings, I have my bad days where I yell at everyone around, I still shake, and sweat at nite. This doesnt always happen but every once in awhile. It does get better in about 2-3 weeks. I didnt go to rehab for it. I did go to my doctor and withdrew from home. I didnt want to be like all the other people who go to rehab get out and go straight to their suppliers. So anyway good luck and try your best to stay away. Im "LIVING" proof that you can get away. (I OD before) Stay clean!!!!

I'm a recovered heroin addict (20 years ago and used for about almost 8 years), as a result I've been through the entire withdrawl, nightmare, depression phase and I hate to tell you that it never entirely goes away really. I do know that the longer that you use the drug, the longer the withdrawl and the more severe the nightmares, depression and pain you'll experience. The tremors will generally last for a few months to even a few years depending on the severity of the habit you have. You need to quit doing that crap as soon as possible or you'll be doing far more damage that you realize.

I sincerely hope this was helpful. I worked for several years in drug counciling after I was clean for 10 years and I've seen many people struggling with their habit. If you want to talk to me about it just drop me a line on my 360 site.

This is something you shouldn't be doing on your own. Get yourself to a clinic/doctor/hospital/rehab unit. Please.
