Please Help with Fibromyalgia, my hair is falling out, what medication should I take? Im scared?

tremor
Amy B

This weekend I have been to the ER two times, in 24hrs. I had 18 tubes of blood taken out, with neck xrays. All were negative. The last doctor who saw me mentioned Fibromyalgia. I had and still have tons of stess in my life, which may cause this. I had to quit my job, due to fatigue, tremors, and pain in my joints and muscles. What is the best thing to do for Fibromyalgia, diet, medications? What should I take for my hair loss? I just turned 31 the day he mentioned this to me. Im scared, please help
Thank you

Amy

Hi Amy! I have a couple friends who have fibromyalgia. Plus my mom. All three deal with it differently. My mom takes downers and ends up at the E.R. twice a month or so. She has tests done without any results. The docs just treat her like she’s nuts. One friend takes pain meds, downers, and alcohol. She’s a mess and still in pain. My third friend takes antidepressents and feels well most the time. Her hair started falling out at one time too. I take antidepressents for my anxiety/depression and it works sooo well. I don’t have a mental disorder, it’s a mood disorder. I dont get enough seratonin to my brain, a chemical imbalance. The meds control that flow and I feel better than I ever have..I’m in my late forties. Fibromyalgia is a condition that screws up the pain receptors. And if your not recieving enough seratonin either, you have a double whammy goin’ on. You stay stressed, stress and anxiety create fatigue and depression. And then you have the faulty pain receptors that create the chronic pain.’ which have fed off your emotional state. Are you following me here? Alot of people won’t even consider an antidepressent because they “think” it’ll make it justified that the pain is just psychological.. When in fact, the pain is real and not just a figment of ones imagination. Just because the tests are all clear, doesn’t mean diddly. I haven’t had exploratory surgery on my brain, but do know what’s wrong. It took one really good , educated psychologist to rule out any emotional trauma and finally tell me what was really wrong. Amen for her!

Too bad you quit your job without a proper diagnosis.

I know two women who suffer as you do. Without a proper diagnosis how can you expect to care for yourself properly? You need a second opinion from a physician and counselling to learn coping skills for your stress. It may also benefit you to speak with a psychiatrist as they can prescribe medication to manage stress along with the counselling.

I understand that Fibromayalgia is a horrid condition to deal with, but you must get a proper diagnosis. Take charge of your care and I am sure some of your stress will ease up as well.

Unfortunately, with fibromyalgia no one treatment is for everyone. Just as the symptoms are different for different ppl, treatment modalities will be different for different ppl. Whatever treatment protocol ends up being best for you will probably include diet & exercise. A diet high in fresh fruits & vegetables & whole grains has been beneficial to many of us. Gentle exercise such as stretching, yoga, walking, & aquatics seems to be best. There are so many meds out there being used to treat the symptoms of fibro. All of them have side effects. The most important thing you can do is to be educated & be a partner in your treatment. May I suggest that you begin now researching online & reading books about fibro. You might also consider joining an on line support group. I know of several that are very good. If you would like any advice in that area please email me. The diagnosis of fibro is made based on symptoms & ruling out other conditions. At this pt there is no test for fibro & it is not unusual for all of your blood test to be fine. As far as hair loss is concerned, I really wish I knew. I too am losing hair. At one time there were hair care products that were supposed to thicken a woman’s hair. That may be another on line research project for you. The important thing is for YOU to take control of as much regarding this disease as you can… your treatment, your coping skills, your life now.

Amy, it is very frightening to hear about this syndrome, I know. Education is your best weapon and always remember that you are your very best advocate. I suggest you log on to FMaware.com. This is the National Fibromyalgia Association’s web site. Also, the best resource in print I’ve found thus far is a book just released this summer by Sharon Ostalecki. I ordered on Amazon. I’ve lent mine to my rhuemotologist, or I’d let you borrow. As for your hair, it may be medications, but it may be stress. There is a condition known as Alopecia that you may wish to investigate. The national organization also has a web site. Don’t despair. This may just be temporary.

I don’t blame you for being scared. I was scared too when I went through all of this about 5 years ago.
All of your test results being negative is a sure sign of FM. The tremmors, I’m not so sure. Do you have problems with your balance? If so, I would look into a condition called Arnold Chiari malformation. That is what I had, plus the FM. I had surgery by the no. 1 doc who does this surgery and have had fantastic results. Remember, the surgery that I am talking about does not cure FM, just helps relieve the symtoms of Chiari.
I think your hair falling out may be due to the stress of all of this. Eat well, and try to go with the flow. I realize it all seems quite hopeless at this point, but when you get a final diagnosis, you will feel much calmer and can proceed with your life.
