Were margin calls a large reason the markets slid?

Every day we read the U.S. economy is falling into a recession triggering a sell-off in stock and futures markets. With such a drastic downturn in the markets nobody had mentioned the possibility of margin calls triggering market tremors. What are your thoughts?
The market didnt go down that much for margin calls. Maybe if some penny stocks crashed a few may have had margin calls. But a stock has to drop 50 percent in value before one gets a msrgin call. It was just the normal fluctuations of the market.
